The kids marvelled at Michaelangelo's upside down masterpiece in the Sistine chapel and were mesmerised by stories of gladiators in battle at the Colosseum.

There were some amazing picture-postcard views to be had here and we certainly ran up the memory card with shots of rolling farmland, sun-dappled vineyards and time-wizened olive groves.
